Temporary Traffic Management Training – West Coast | Te Tai Poutini

Building resilience into the West Coast’s State Highway network remains the focus of NZTA investment going into 2019, with a view to protecting  the region’s main economic driver: tourism.

Tourism continues to flourish and now represents the fastest growing economy for the West Coast region.  For tourism to continue to thrive, a reliable safe network of roads is vital – which is why temporary traffic management work is expected to remain in high demand in areas such as Westport, Greymouth, Hokitika and Haast.

These towns feature as notable stopping points along the SH6,running the length of the West Coast.  The SH6 forms a critical lifeline link between the region’s communities, as well as providing access to key tourism attractions such as Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, Punakaiki and various walking and cycling trails.

Like many coastal roads across New Zealand, the highway is prone to closures from slips, rock falls, flooding and crashes.  Such closures not only disrupt the travel of customers but also have a significant impact on the economy.

There are often no viable alternative routes when the SH6 is forced to close and where detours are available, they are usually lengthy and run on unsealed local roads (almost half the local roads on the West Coast are unsealed).
